Dangerous Santa Ana Winds Trigger Red Flag Warnings Across Los Angeles, Ventura Counties

A severe Santa Ana wind event is unfolding across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, prompting a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Red Flag Warning that includes the Santa Clarita Valley, per the National Weather Service.

The warning, which signals extremely high fire risk due to strong winds and low humidity, will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, with certain areas under advisories until Friday morning.

Strongest Wind Gusts Reported:

Areas Affected By Santa Ana Winds:

The PDS Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Santa Clarita Valley and Castaic Lake areas, as well as the Southern Ventura County Mountains, San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Susana Mountains, and Santa Monica Mountains. This alert also includes adjacent valleys, such as the San Fernando Valley.

The warning extends to the Ventura County coastal plain, covering areas from Malibu to Oxnard and reaching as far as Catalina Island and Lake Casitas.

Weather Conditions:

The Santa Ana winds, known for their dry, gusty nature, are being driven by strong upper-level winds and moderate cold air advection.

In mountain and foothill areas, winds reaching 60 to 80 mph are expected, with isolated gusts up to 100 mph in parts of the San Gabriel Mountains. Coastal and valley areas can expect winds between 50 and 70 mph.

Compounding the risk is the projected humidity drop to 8-15 percent, which is anticipated to last through Thursday and potentially into Friday.

Critical Advisory:

Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise extreme caution, as new fire ignitions could spread rapidly. Emergency services and local authorities are on high alert, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, especially in regions under the PDS Red Flag Warning.

Safety Recommendations:

  • Avoid activities that could spark fires, such as outdoor grilling or using equipment that emits sparks.
  • Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds.
  • Monitor local alerts and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
