‘Intense Rain,’ Possible Debris Flows Expected As Third Storm Approaches Santa Clarita

A third storm is expected to hit the Santa Clarita Valley on Wednesday, bringing “intense” downpours and the possibility for debris flows near the Elsmere Fire burn area.

The upcoming storm is expected to last from Wednesday through Friday, bringing up to two inches of rain in Santa Clarita, said Ryan Kittell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS).

“The bulk of the rain will be Thursday night into Friday morning,” Kittell said. “Thursday night we could see fairly intense rain.”

With periods of heavy rain, recent burn areas could see debris flow, especially near the Elsmere Fire, according to Kittell.

“Folks in burn scar areas should definitely mentally prepare for a plan if you are to evacuate,” Kittell said.

While snow levels are expected to be at 6,000 feet of elevation, which is higher than the peak of the Grapevine, officials caution that there is still a possibility that the mountain pass could be affected.

Come Saturday, conditions are expected to be dry, with a slight chance of weaker storms possible at the end of next week, according to Kittell.

Santa Clarita residents in need of free sandbags in preparation for the storm can go to any Los Angeles County Fire station. However, the bags are not pre-filled, and not all fire stations have sand available, according to Fire officials.

The two fire stations that have free sand is Fire Station 73 on Railroad Avenue near 15th Street in Newhall, and Fire Station 76 on Henry Mayo Drive in Valencia.

All Los Angeles County Public Works locations are also expected to provide sand, according to officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
