The Dodgers held off the Giants in a 9-5 victory against Bay Area rivals as they say goodbye to the legendary broadcaster.
The Los Angeles Dodgers took game two of a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night with a 9-5 victory, the same evening that Major League Baseball received the devastating news that the long-time Dodgers and legendary baseball broadcaster, Vin Scully, had passed away.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, while the Giants were rallying for five runs to cut into the Dodgers 6-0 lead, it was announced live on the air by Dodger’s current broadcaster and Scully’s replacement, Joe Davis, that the voice of the Dodgers had passed away.
“It’s with heavy hearts that we pass along some really tough news. At the age of 94, Vin Scully has passed away,” Davis said before a brief moment of silence on the broadcast.
San Francisco’s five-run 4th inning off Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Anderson very nearly added more sadness to the evening for Dodgers fans. That, however, would be as close as the Giants would get in this one. As if Vin’s spirit was a guiding force for the Boys In Blue, Anderson was able to withstand the Giants attack and retain the Dodgers lead despite seeing it cut down to a skinny run.

After 5.1 innings, Anderson departed the game with the score still 6-5. Perhaps the unsung hero of the game was the Dodgers bullpen. Four relievers, including David Price, newly acquired Chris Martin, Alex Vesia, and Evan Phillips combined to throw four scoreless innings surrendering just one hit to keep the Giants at bay before the Dodgers offense was able to kick start itself again.
The lineup broke through again in the 8th inning when Gavin Lux hit a run-scoring triple to chase home a much needed insurance run. Later in the inning, both Austin Barnes and Cody Bellinger had two-out extra base hits to pad the Dodgers lead to 9-5, the final score of the affair
Tuesday’s Dodgers-Giants game won’t go down in the long history book of disdain between the two teams, both of whom departed New York in the late 1950’s for California. A rivalry that featured notable names such as Koufax, Marichal, Roseboro, division races, and everything in between.
Through it all, Scully was there to lead viewers through the events with his Picasso-like storytelling ability. For one more night, the Dodgers and Giants squared off with the voice of the rivalry still present on this Earth.
Wednesday evening’s game will be the first time the Dodgers and Giants square off without Scully since 1927. The game will begin at 7:10 p.m. PDT, in all likelihood following a well-deserved tribute to Scully at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
Dodgers starting pitcher Julio Urias will take on Giants starter Alex Cobb as Los Angeles looks to take the first three games of the series.
