“Knowing you can trust your bail agent is a weight off your mind during an already stressful situation,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “Bail agents must meet extensive requirements before receiving their license.”
To become a bail agent in the state of California, the person must be a California resident who has obtained specific pre-licensing education, as well as annual continuing education after they become licensed, according to the Bail Resource Center & Academy.
A minimum of 20 hours of approved prelicensing classroom study on the duties and responsibilities of a bail licensee and related laws, regulations and ethics are required for all bail applicants.

Applicants are then required to file an application for a bail license with the California Department of Insurance, purchase a bond in the penal sum of $1,000 executed by a California admitted surety, be fingerprinted, submit all necessary documents and pass a written exam.
In order to receive a license, applicants must also meet certain criteria as stated by federal law.
The law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a felony involving dishonesty or breach of trust from conducting insurance business unless they have obtained written consent from the Insurance Commissioner.
Bail licenses are issued for terms of two years, and bail agents must complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education before their license can be renewed.
