Mayor Smyth Updates on Covid and Reopening — June 23, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Matt Watson starts the show talking to Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth. Mayor Smyth calls in to address the latest reopenings for companies across Santa Clarita. Bars, nail salons, and more businesses are getting back to work, and Mayor Smyth is happy more people are able to get back to work. Mayor Smyth addresses some of the most popular questions regarding what is and is not open, and also talks about sports leagues for all ages across the valley being able to return to action.

There is still a lot that is uncertain, but Mayor Smyth has been working closely with health officials in Santa Clarita and with the latest data being provided by Henry Mayo to make the most informed decisions. Mayor Smyth has a 16-year-old kid of his own, and knows how badly he, his son, and the rest of the community wants to return to sports as usual. Mayor Smyth reminds everyone that not all decisions that are being made are coming directly from Mayor Smyth and his team, and that Santa Clarita is subject to mandates and orders enforced on the entirety of Los Angeles County. Mayor Smyth also spends time addressing tonight’s City Council meeting, and gives a preview of some of the topics being discussed and decisions being made. Listen to Mayor Smyth’s full interview in the first and second segments of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Stacie Chavez, High School Program Specialist, and Mike Franke, Junior High School Program Specialist, of DFY in SCV. Stacie and Mike talk about what DFY in SCV does in the community, and how they work with schools across the valley to promote a drug-free and healthy lifestyle for young adults and children. Drug use and abuse can start at a very early age for some kids, and DFY in SCV works hard to help prevent children from exposing themselves to harmful drugs or substances at an early age.

DFY in SCV puts a lot of effort into creating specific curriculums for students in junior high school and high school, and they see a lot of results with their group programs and clubs they have set up at schools around the valley. With Covid-19 closing schools across California, DFY in SCV has transitioned into an entirely online platform and has greatly increased their social media profile to continue to help kids and young adults remain drug free. Stacie and Mike take some time to talk about what sets them apart from previous movements such as D.A.R.E.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
