SCVi and NASA Team Up — May 27, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Jason Gibbs, Vice Chair of Advocacy at Valley Industry Association (VIA). Jason calls in to the show to talk about how small businesses have been impacted by the changes brought by Covid-19. Small businesses across the United States have been severely impacted by the shutdowns, and many face the reality of closing their doors for good. Jason and his team at VIA have been working hard to help get businesses back to work and giving them guidance through this difficult time. Jason provides insight on what the city is doing to move forward and how they are working with the community to try to create the best solution. Jason gives great advice about how to handle the current situation and also shares many stories about what is happening to the small business owners in Santa Clarita. Listen to Jason’s full interview during the first and second segments of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guests on the show are Amber Raskin, Founder & Executive Director of iLEAD Schools, and Kathleen Fredette, Director of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) at iLEAD & SCVi Schools. Amber and Kathleen call in to the show to talk about the incredible math, science, and engineering programs available to the learners at SCVi and iLEAD Schools. SCVi and iLEAD Schools give kids a different learning experience by empowering them to do more and learn more. The Maker Program at SCVi Schools gives learners projects and learning experiences that they will never forget, and gives them a taste of where their education can take them. Amber and Kathleen are huge contributors to the Maker Program, and they are constantly looking for new ways to engage their learners. One of the Maker Program’s most anticipated annual projects is the NASA space project. Learners are challenged to create an experiment that is actually sent into space for a period of time. After that time period is up, the project is returned to the students so they can perform analysis on their experiment to see if it was successful. It is an incredible learning experience SCVi and iLEAD Schools is very proud to provide for their learners. Kathleen also spends time talking about why mathematics is such an important field and how SCVi has transformed their program to mean so much more than boring numbers to their learners. Listen to their full interviews during the first and second segments of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to continue the conversation about dealing with trauma and anxiety. Kristina goes more in-depth on talk-therapy and how this method can be so impactful for some while not working at all for others. Listen to Kristina’s full interview in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
