Dr. Gene Dorio: Snippets From The Frontline

Doctor’s Diary: May 7, 2021

Gallantry in the face of fear, Gene Uzawa Dorio, M.D.

I remember when my high school friend lost his father. He was a surgeon in Vietnam when their hospital mobile team was mortared. Several physicians and nurses died.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought us another war, and many of my healthcare colleagues faced the onslaught with gallantry.

This week we honor nurses; stalwarts of the medical profession. They are on the frontline of this battle, saving lives, holding hands, and communicating with families. Every day they pick themselves up facing seemingly and unending threats to themselves and their families.

The war is not over, but light is on the horizon. Without nurses, we would never have made it through this ordeal. Because of them, we did.

Thank you nurses for standing against this threat. Thank you for putting aside your fears. Thank you for not giving up. A battle was fought, and nurses led the way.

Your heroics will never be forgotten. Your persistent and fearless care will live in the patients you saved and the loved ones you brought back to families.

We honor you this week for getting us through this battle.

Thank you for being our heroes.
