On Friday The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall area office is scheduled to be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
The checkpoint is set to begin at 8 p.m. and conclude around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
CHP is set to announce the location just prior to the operation, according to officials.
Motorists who are approaching the checkpoint are set to see informational signs advising them of the sobriety checkpoint ahead.
Once motorists are diverted into the lanes and momentarily detained an officer is set to explain the purpose of the checkpoint.
The goal of the DUI checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public in order to deter people from driving under the influence while keeping the streets safe.
While checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road, CHP is set to arrest DUI drivers who fail to take notice of the warnings.
Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable, added officials.
Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance with the guidelines for the checkpoints operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer.
Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles are set to be checked.
If traffic volume becomes too heavy vehicles to be checked are set to be selected by a pre-set standard such as every 5th or 10th vehicle, in order to assure objectivity, according to officials.
