Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Hosts Third Annual ‘Hope Grows Here’ Cancer Survivor Celebration

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital hosted the third annual celebration of cancer survivors in Santa Clarita on Thursday.

The purpose of the celebration is to give cancer survivors the chance to connect with one another, as well as Henry Mayo cancer program staff.

“It’s about celebrating survivorship for those who have been diagnosed or are living with cancer, as well as those that have total remission,” said Lisa Ortega, director of Outpatient Programs for Henry Mayo. “It’s just a time to celebrate with them.”

Visitors were encouraged to write well-wishes for other patients that were currently battling cancer, or tie a remembrance ribbon for a lost loved one.

The Henry Mayo community cancer program has been active in Santa Clarita for over 30 years, partnering with multiple community partners including UCLA and City of Hope and Providence, according to Ortega.

Cancer survivor Janelle Shultz first discovered a “hard kernel” on the underside of one of her breasts in October of 2015. Within the week a biopsy revealed that it was cancerous and thus began a long journey of surgeries, genetic testing and eventual recovery. Shultz discovered that she possessed a hereditary gene — PALB2 — which has been shown to increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

After consulting several doctors, Shultz followed their recommendation of undergoing a bilateral mastectomy, as well as the removal of her ovaries.

While Shultz is now cancer-free, several of her family members also have discovered that they possess the PALB2 gene, including one of her daughters, who then elected to have a preventative bilateral mastectomy.

“Be aware of what you are up against, said Shultz. “Because that can prolong your life.”

In attendance was Jinky Tyrrell, a stage-four cancer survivor and Mrs. SCV Royal Princess of 2019.

Also in attendance was Jinky Tyrrell, a stage-four cancer survivor and Mrs. SCV Royal Princess of 2019, who has dedicated herself to advocating cancer prevention and treatment in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The guests for the evening also included Jameeliah Joy Hadley, childhood cancer survivor and author, who has published a book on her experiences.

“I thought it was really important to share my story with other survivors and maybe their kids and grandkids and let them know that they’re not alone in this journey,” said Hadley.

The program culminated with a butterfly release, representing the continued journeys of cancer survivors.
