Residents Reminded To Drive Safe During Back-to-School Safety Month

August marks the month most Santa Clarita students go back to school, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is reminding residents to drive safely during Back-to-School Safety Month.

“Please drive like it is your child, grandchild, niece or nephew walking or riding their bike to school,” said Sergeant Robert Hill. “Pick-up and drop-off times can be hectic, but it’s important to be patient and stay safe as children are getting to and from school.”

Drivers must stop behind school buses with a stop sign and flashing red lights so students can safely get on and off the bus.

Drivers must also remain stopped while the red lights are on and drivers in both directions must stop on any two-lane road without a median or a center turn lane.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department offers the following tips to stay safe around schools:

  • Slow down and follow the speed limit.
  • Adhere to school policies and procedures for dropping off and picking up students.
  • Stop for school buses. Watch for children rushing to catch the bus or exiting.
  • Whenever possible, avoid blocking the crosswalk while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
  • For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available, and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals.

  1. I wish people would have respect for our children and our community all year. But more and more people just race around town with no regard for anyone or anything.

  2. If children are taught good behaviors/cautions/manners, bad outcomes are lessened even in the presence of others bad behaviors!

  3. Why do the kids have to go back in August the hottest month of the year. What happened to the Monday after Labor Day like it used to be? It’s crazy!

  4. Sometimes the school’s air conditioners are better functioning than the air conditioning at home and it isn’t a bad time to be indoors learning.

  5. Those darn school buses drive way too slow, and stop everywhere. They get in commuter’s way.
