As January comes to a close, “My Conscious Dad” Host Alex Urbina is asking parents if they’ve considered bringing in the new year with a resolution to renew their commitment to their children.

While most parents make an unconscious commitment after their child is born to nurture him or her so they can succeed in all areas of their life as they grow, few parents consciously revisit that commitment throughout their child’s life.
“I think somewhere down the line in their growth– maybe when they’re seven or nine or 15 or 18 –there’s a pivotal moment where … if the their children are doing okay, (parents) just kind of let them figure it out,” Urbina explained, “rather than being clear about what their commitment is and figuring out how to reinvent themselves as a parent to help their kids get to the next level.”
Some parents may have initially only committed to doing the best they can for their child, which Urbina said he himself is guilty of when it comes to his own three children.

“I think there was an unconscious agreement that I made in my mind that I was going to the best I can, and doing the best you can as a parent versus (being) committed to having your kids win, they’re distinctively different things,” he said. “If you’re operating from ‘I’m just going to do the best I can,’ not really from a higher sense of awareness, then guess what you’re going to do? You’re going to create the ‘I’m doing the best I can’ results.”
When parents make the conscious decision to commit to their kids in every way– and prioritize that commitment over all other aspects of their life, like work and finances –then “it’s a whole different ball game,” Urbina said.
“Playing to win” in the game of parenting means an individual is rigorously working on themselves and striving to be self-aware, doing regular self reflection, setting goals and relying on someone they trust to give them honest feedback, according to Urbina.
“If you’re not playing to win, it’s ok,” he said. “But figure out where you are. Take a deep, honest look and ask yourself, ‘Where am I playing this game called parenting? Am I just an average parent? Am I a great parent? Am I a good parent? Or do I want to be an extraordinary parent?’”
