Desert Solace co-founder and family liaison Jerri Jorgensen explained how many of her clients have underlying trauma feeding their addictions.

Jorgensen described addiction as a way in which people maladaptively cope with trauma and other negative emotions. Calling trauma is a “core issue” underlying addiction, Jorgensen said that addictions often form “because the core issues have never been addressed.”

“Some people think that trauma has to be this huge event where there was molestation, there was abandonment, or a huge accident, a natural disaster,” Jorgensen said. “Trauma can be as maybe insignificant as ‘My dad didn’t show up to my ball game,’ or ‘He didn’t come to my band concert,’ or ‘I got turned down for a date.’”

Rather than requiring a major life event, Jorgensen said that what really leads to trauma is “the stories we make up” about the incidents from which trauma stems.

Jorgensen describes the mindset that leads to trauma as one in which the person comes to build a negative self-image, blaming themselves for the bad things that happen to them and coming to think of themselves as worthless or unloveable.

“It’s not necessarily the event that happens to us,” Jorgensen said. “It’s the stories that we make up about it. Like, ‘Oh gosh, okay, I got turned down for this, well, what does that say about me?’”

Jorgensen said that Desert Solace focuses on getting clients to engage with their negative emotions rather than trying to cover them up with substance abuse or addictive behaviors, helping them build the self-esteem to work towards recovery.

“We’ve got to step through that shame and step through that fear to get to the other side,” Jorgensen said. “The only way out is through. That’s the only way out. You can’t go under, around, or over.”

In group therapy, clients work with others who have gone through similar experiences and who are fighting the same battle toward recovery. Clients also have the opportunity to work with horses through equestrian therapy. They can take advantage of their surroundings by going on nature walks.

The inpatient addiction treatment center allows clients to get away from the stresses of their everyday lives, including technology, to bond with one another in a safe environment surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape.

Furthermore, Desert Solace keeps in touch with each client even after they’ve finished their residential program.

“There’s a lot of aftercare that goes on, and we figure out the aftercare plan for them, because we want to stay connected,” Jorgensen said.
