Bars, Salons, Gyms Remained Closed As Part of ‘Safer At Home’ Order In L.A. County

After announcing the next phase of reopening Los Angeles County, leaders clarified what parts of “Safer at Home” are still in effect, adding the order “does not have an expiration date.”

Starting Friday, all retailers are able to open for door side pickup, not including those in indoor malls, and manufacturers who supply those retail businesses are able to operate, according to Los Angeles County Supervisors.

“County health orders will not have an expiration date because unfortunately, COVID-19 does not have an expiration date,” said Supervisor Hilda Solis.

These newly reopened businesses are still required to adhere to public health orders and social distancing, according to Solis.

“I want to thank all of you for your resolve, your compassion and commitment to stay ‘Safer at Home’ during the pandemic we appreciate your generous spirit to protect our vulnerable populations from contracting COVID-19,” Solis said.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer noted Wednesday that these businesses, as well as the ones reopened on May 8, are only allowed to operate as curbside or door side, and customers are not allowed to enter.

Public Health officials are reopening the county in stages, based on the risk of infection and the amount of contact between people in businesses or venues.

In addition to the businesses, County beaches are expected to reopen Friday, as well as tennis and pickleball courts, shooting and archery ranges, and equestrian centers.

However, the beaches are only open for individual activities, such as running, walking, kayaking swimming and surfing. Group sports and activities, like picnicking and sunbathing are not allowed at this time and the parking lots, bike paths, piers and boardwalks remain closed as of Wednesday.

Ferrer did not announce an extension date for the “Safer at Home” order, but previously noted it could be several more months.

Public Health officials further urged the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks while near others in public, calling it the “new normal” in L.A. County as the recovery process begins.

An additional 925 COVID-19 cases were reported Thursday. The County total of COVID-19 cases now stands at 35,329 according to Ferrer.

Over 272,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted so far as of Thursday, with approximately 11 percent of people testing positive, according to public health officials. Ferrer noted that many tests had been dropped from the total count due to the fact that they had been discovered to be blood tests, not swabs.

5,660 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 16 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.

Of those, 26 percent are currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while another 19 percent are on ventilators, according to public health officials.

51 new deaths were reported Thursday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 1,709  in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

More than half of all coronavirus fatalities across the county are from institutional settings, such as nursing homes, according to public health officials.

92 percent of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer.

The public health director compared these deaths to seasonal influenza in Los Angeles County, which is about 250 fatalities per year on average.

“You can understand why the mortality rate for COVID-19 is so worrisome as it far exceeds what we’re normally used to with a communicative disease,” Ferrer said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 837 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley. These include:

  • 529 in the City of Santa Clarita
  • 229 in Castaic*
  • 27 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 30 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 12 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Six in the unincorporated areas of Valencia

Included in the Castaic numbers are inmates at the Pitchess Detention Center, according to the Department of Public Health.

Public health officials are not releasing death or recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

An update on the Santa Clarita Valley is expected later Thursday afternoon.

  1. With people going outside & going to places…this isn’t going to help stop The Coronavirus. The way people will understand the seriousness of this virus, is when someone they know is infected by this horrible virus or even being infected themselves. God help you all.

    • I do not know 1 person who tested positive for COVID I deal with people all over the Country to include Canada , Mexico and Asia. And no one I talk to knows of anyone who has tested positive either. I am not saying it is not an active virus, I am saying it is blown out of proportion by our media and we are stuck in the middle of a political mess !! We need to move forward and reopen ! You cant stop the virus just like you cant stop the flu all we can do is be more aware of taking better care of ourselves.

      • Most deaths are elders and in nursing homes.i Watched the live hearings this morning with the senators questioning Dr bright pretty interesting stuff and a bit scary on the severity of this virus. If you can find it I suggest everyone watch it. He talks about how the CDC messed up on recommendations that should have been really emphasized to the public about social distance and masks before this thing spread. He talks about recent side effects on children. He really puts into perspective on how we were not very prepared for this outbreak and how it is only getting worse.watch it everyone.

      • Your response is illogical and insulting. Let’s suppose you and everyone you talk to (your words not mine), has never experienced racism. That does NOT negate the fact that it exists and affects people of color every single day of their lives. How fortunate for you that you personally have not been touched by this virus, but do not diminish the pain and loss of those who have suffered from this pandemic. Your self-absorbed observation and lack of empathy is one of the reasons so many are lackadaisical when it comes to prioritizing public safety. The media did not create this mess (again your words not mine) and have struggled to cover the story accurately as more Republican led states suppress the actual Covid-19 numbers by either refusing to test meat packing industry employees, inmates and seniors in nursing homes, or purposely not including these numbers in the total confirmed cases. Moreover, it was Trump who FIRST politicized the virus by calling it a Democratic hoax to undermine his re-election. He continues even today, four months into this pandemic to use divisive rhetoric to rile up his base and not take ANY responsibility for his willful lack of leadership during this time.

      • Lori
Oh my gosh. I think it just depends on you. I know three people that have had the virus. Three actual people in my life. One on the east coast and two in the middle. One of my very good friends lost her friend to covid. That was in Florida. Not one of these people are seniors and none of them had any pre existing conditions. I’m happy you haven’t had anyone in your life contract this virus. It’s very much a real issue and it is impacting many people. Everyone is feel to free however they want about the stay at home and being back up and running for sure, please don’t behave as if this isn’t a real thing. Viruses aren’t political until people make them that way.

      • Watch the Republicans for the rule of law YouTube video called “Donald Trump Acts Like He’s a King,” that’s being aired on Fox News. You’ll see that not all Republicans support Trump.

    • You must have money in the bank for those comments. The rest of us have to work for living so the reality of it is, WE NEED TO WORK TO PAY OUR BILLS.

      • Diego Villagrana, you must be new here, Star P. is a constitutional lawyer so it knows of what it speaks;
I would like to know how the arrogant contemptuous self-absorbed jerk of a constitutional lawyer gets that FAT head threw the front door each day.

    • If everyone stayed home entirely for the length of incubation period. Should have been done with this! Mostly everyone has it. The underlying conditions that people have need to be the ones to stay home!!!

  2. With all politics aside everyone should sit back and hear doctor brights testimony this morning. It’s like Six hours so grab some popcorn sit back and listen to every question and answer it’s pretty informative.

  3. Dr. bright
Is exactly that! The only completely honest person in the Bunch! You’d better listen up and buckle up because if you don’t we are dead ? people walking!

  4. While you’re at it, watch the video I mentioned above, that is made by Republicans.

  5. infowars.com

    • Not really info war on that video I posted it’s a court hearing long and boring but very informative everyone should listen to it uncut and not from any news network. He really puts it into perspective on how we were not ready since the Obama days and how CDC failed us on masks and ppe which should have really been pushed to everyone in public and at work before this thing spread.

  6. People this is not a political issue this is a national health problem. Nothing will ever be solved unless we can join together as Americans and get politics out of this. Blessings to all of you who have lost someone to this virus and for all of you struggling to get through it. And it’s not just the virus, let’s try to learn something from this and come out a better America

  7. Salazar, where did you hear that “mostly everyone has it”?

  8. I myself was not a believer until it happened to someone close to me. Everybody has they’re way of thinking, is this virus real? Yes, it is. Growing up during the AIDS pandemic , it changed how people dated, people were scared to kiss ,condoms was the beginning of a new norm and I never knew anyone that was infected. Is AIDS or HIV real? Is COVID-19 real? Absolutely.!
