The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported an additional 1,174 COVID-19 cases and 14 additional deaths throughout the county on Sunday.

In total, 1,454,172 cases of coronavirus and 26,013 deaths connected to the disease have been reported in L.A. County since the beginning of the pandemic.

Los Angeles County continues to see a downward trend in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, providing some reassurance that higher vaccination rates and safety precautions at Labor Day celebrations helped avert the usual increase in cases the County experiences after major holidays.

“While we are seeing important gains in our efforts to reduce community spread of COVID-19, we cannot afford to be complacent given the very real risks posed by this virus. We still need to lower the number of new cases so that we enter the fall and winter seasons in the best possible shape to avoid the devastation we endured last year,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of Public Health. “We typically see respiratory viruses flourish with the colder weather and when we move activities indoors. If we raise our vaccination rate, protect ourselves and others with masking, and use expanded testing to identify people who are infected early so they can isolate and their close contacts quarantine, we have a chance to avoid another winter surge like we suffered last year.”

As of Sunday, Sept. 26, 34,371 cumulative cases have been reported in the Santa Clarita Valley since March of 2020, according to Public Health. These cases include:

• 26,199 in the City of Santa Clarita*
• 62 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
• 1,117 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
• 4,356 in Castaic*
• 70 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
• 4 in Placerita Canyon
• 18 in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon
• 22 in unincorporated Sand Canyon
• 161 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
• 47 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
• 1,634 in Stevenson Ranch
• 415 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
• 266 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia

*As of Wednesday, Sept. 22, public health officials have recorded 2,182 cumulative cases at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,577 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials reported one additional coronavirus-related death at the Santa Clarita facility on Monday, for 168 total deaths at the hospital and at least 317 in the entire Santa Clarita Valley since March 2020.

Public Health encourages everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. Anyone 12 and older living or working in L.A. County can get vaccinated against COVID-19. Many vaccination sites across the county, including all the County-run sites, are also offering third doses of vaccine to eligible immunocompromised people. Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status.
