School administrators at West Ranch contacted school resource officers on Thursday afternoon after they became aware of a “social media threat” made by a student.

“School resource officers initiated an immediate investigation and detained a 17-year-old male student on charges of making criminal threats,” said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “The juvenile was booked at Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.”

Miller asked parents to remind their students about stop and think about the consequences before posting on social media.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station takes all threats seriously, Miller added.

“Safety is our number one priority,” she said. “We work hard along with the William S. Hart District to make our schools safe places for students and staff.”

The principal of West Ranch sent an email out to all of the parents Thursday afternoon notifying the school community of the threat made to the campus.

“Students and parents acted appropriately and quickly by making administration aware of what was said,” the email, sent by Principal Mark Crawford, said. “West Ranch administration contacted law enforcement and met with the student in question.”

Law enforcement officials have completed a threat assessment and parents have worked with the school through this process, added Crawford.

West Ranch was determined to be safe for students and staff, according to school officials.

“While this is an unfortunate incident, we are pleased that by working together and acting swiftly, we were able to identify and work with the student in question, and then begin our safety procedures we have in place for this situation,” said Crawford. “As a reminder, if you see something, say something.”

The only way to keep the school safe is to speak up, he said.

“We work hard to make this a safe place for our students and staff,” said Crawford. “Working together makes sure that we can continue to make this a reality.”
