Tuesday, KHTS Radio interviewed staff from Doc’s Inn about a violent incident that occurred on February 28, where an 84-year-old man, known as “Bible John,” was allegedly attacked by a 21-year-old college baseball player from The Master’s University.
The alleged attacker, Owen Hayes, was arrested two weeks later after a plea for information went out to the public. He has since been expelled from the non-denominational Christian college.
Bible John, a regular at the bar, was described by Doc’s Inn staff as a “lonely” widowed elderly man who comes in to enjoy a glass of red wine and listen to the jukebox.
“We gave him that name 20 years ago when he gave the owner of the bar a bible, and since then, his nickname has been Bible John,” said Brandon Best, Doc’s Inn bartender and security staff. “It’s sad to see this happen.”
On the night of the incident, security footage shows the suspect attacking Bible John from behind, sending him to the ground with one punch.
“He likes to be in there because he’s lonely, and it shouldn’t matter what hour of the day or night someone chooses to go to a bar,” said Renee Kennedy, daytime bartender at Doc’s Inn.
During the incident, the same group of young people also allegedly broke one of the front windows of the bar, and the suspect and his friends left quickly after.
Since Hayes was arrested for his alleged part in the attack, his fiancée has come forward with allegations that the victim “inappropriately touched” her before the altercation turned violent. Charges have not yet been filed.
Doc’s Inn staff expressed frustration over the lack of accountability from the alleged suspect and his associates.
“I think what I’m upset about is that nobody has had empathy. The guy that did it, like, hasn’t apologized, and I feel like that’s a really dangerous thing,” said Chrisha Moore, Doc’s Inn manager. “We’re all human. We make mistakes. And of course, alcohol was involved. But have a little empathy for (the victim).”
