Over Two Dozen Threat Assessments Completed For Santa Clarita Schools

In the last week, detectives with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station conducted over two dozen threat assessments for schools within the Santa Clarita Valley, officials said.

Over the last week, detectives conducted over two dozen threat assessments, and arrested three Santa Clarita students and referred another two to “appropriate resources,” according to officials.

“We take each threat seriously. We investigate and complete a thorough assessment to determine its credibility,” said SCV Sheriff’s COBRA Sergeant Brian Shreves. “Detectives spend countless hours conducting interviews, doing extensive research, meeting with school administrators and doing home checks.”

Following school shootings, there can be an increase in “hoax threats,” according to an official statement from Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station. Each threat is treated as serious and investigated as such.

Hoax threats come in the form of online or verbal remarks made to fellow students, but have  devastating consequences, according to officials.

“(Hoax threats) can cause severe anxiety to students and parents,” reads the statement. “And by making thoughtless remarks or posting pictures implying violence on social media, young people risk starting out their adulthood with a criminal record, and being labeled a felon.”

If a threat is seen or heard, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station urges residents to contact the station at 661-255-1121. Officials say threats should not be shared, as this may cause panic. Responsible social media use is a topic officials recommend discussing with their children.
