An orthodontist in Santa Clarita is weighing in on what Thanksgiving foods are considered “braces-friendly” just in time for the holiday weekend.

Dr. Megan LeCornu from Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics noted that orthodontists generally “love” Thanksgiving when it comes to their patients. 

“Thanksgiving is an orthodontist’s dream holiday because it’s all the soft foods,” LeCornu said. “The reason we love it is, when we go back to work after the holiday, we don’t have 30 emergency calls of broken brackets.”

The soft foods that LeCornu mentioned by name as “very braces-friendly” include many Thanksgiving dinner staples: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and bread rolls.  

“You’ve still got to brush your teeth after, but it doesn’t break braces,” LeCornu said. 

In contrast, LeCornu advised those with braces to stay away from any “ooey gooey sticky chewy” foods and candies that could break brackets, get stuck between teeth and cause cavities. 

LeCornu pointed out that these types of foods — particularly candies — are more of a problem during Halloween than Thanksgiving.

“We literally have to double our emergency visits after Halloween for at least two days,” she said. “Usually it’s kids who were eating something they weren’t supposed to and they broke a bracket.”
