Described as a “gentle soul” by shelter volunteers, 5-year-old pit mix Barnaby’s affectionate, playful personality has quickly made him a volunteer favorite at the Castaic Animal Shelter.

Barnaby first came to the shelter a few weeks ago as a stray, and has since come out of his shell with people and other dogs alike.
“Barnaby is what I call a love monkey,” said Paul Martinsen, a shelter volunteer. “When you sit down, he’ll just come up and nuzzle into you. He loves affection, he loves to get pet. He’s also very intelligent and very, very gentle.”

One way Barnaby enjoys bonding with shelter volunteers is by putting his head in their laps for pets and gazing up at them “with those loving eyes,” Martinsen added.
While on walks, Barnaby enjoys greeting other dogs at the fences and sniffing while his tail wags. He has even been known to “play” with other dogs through the fence while in an outdoor pen.
The ideal adopters for Barnaby would be an active family with older children who would enjoy giving him lots of affection, playing with him and taking him out on walks or runs.
“He is just a wonderful, wonderful dog,” Martinsen said. “Just a very, very gentle soul.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series
Once a month, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 100 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 100 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by KHTS Writer and Editor Melissa Lampert-Abramovitch, who has more than 12 years of experience in the animal rescue world.
