KHTS Adopt A Pet: Harley, Castaic Animal Shelter (VIDEO)

Known as the “gentle giant” of the Castaic Animal Shelter, 6-year-old Harley has been waiting to find his forever home for more than a month.

A unique mix of what shelter volunteers guess is labrador retriever and rottweiler, Harley was found as a stray roaming the streets, but no owners have come forward to claim him. KHTS Adopt a Pet - Harley

“He is around 85 pounds, but he’s so gentle. He’s so affectionate,” said Terra Dispirito, a shelter volunteer. “He’s loving, he knows how to sit, he gives his paw. We are just shocked that he is still with us. He is such a good boy.”

Although Harley has an overall mellow personality, Dispirito noted that he also loves to go for walks and play with shelter volunteers.

Harley does well with other dogs and would be the ideal pet for a variety of different potential adopters, according to Dispirito.

“I believe Harley would be great in many situations,” she said. “When dogs first come to our care center, … it’s overwhelming. There’s a lot of noise, barking, but he’s always kept a calm demeanor.”

Perhaps because of his size, Harley has continued to be passed up by potential adopters, but shelter volunteers are hopeful that he will find his forever home in time for the holidays.

“Gentle giant is what we call him here,” Dispirito said. “He’s so gentle, he’s so sweet… He’s just an overall great dog that’s getting overlooked.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Once a month, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 100 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 100 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by KHTS Writer and Editor Melissa Lampert-Abramovitch, who has more than 12 years of experience in the animal rescue world.

  1. A suggestion for future stories. It would be helpful if you included the ID# of the pet so when someone inquires to the shelter (your call is actually directed to the call center – not the Castaic shelter), shelter staff will be able to quickly provide you with more information over the phone.

Hopefully, this boy finds his forever home very soon!
