Rep. Katie Hill, D-Agua Dulce, joined her freshman congressional class at the steps of the Senate building Tuesday afternoon in an emergency press conference to address the government shutdown, as well as clarify her stance on a border barrier.

“We’re here because we were sent here by the American people to make a difference and to make government work, and yet we came here in the midst of a shutdown,” Hill said. “It is proof-positive that the dysfunction that has been ruling Washington has to change.”
Representatives in the House have passed several bills in an effort to re-open the government, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has “refused” to vote on any of the bills, as they did not provide $5 billion requested by the Trump administration for a border wall on the U.S./Mexico border, according to officials.
“We have, since we have gotten here, been voting over and over again to take steps to re-open government, (which is) exactly what the American people asked us to do,” Hill said. “Mitch McConnell refuses to take any of those to a vote.”
Hill has repeatedly stated that she wants to re-open the government first before negotiating funds for the wall.
“We’re ready to negotiate,” Hill said. “We’re ready to make a deal. But we have to get people paid, we have to make sure essential services are working again, and as soon as that happens we will talk.”
Hill initially expressed that she would support some funding for a form of physical barriers at the border on CNN Friday, and later appeared on Fox News Saturday night to clarify her stance.
“We know that there’s already fencing and other physical barriers across the border in many different places, but there are gaps, and we need to find ways of filling those gaps and repairing the fencing,” Hill said. “I think for many of us, there’s not really doubt that some kind of physical barrier is necessary.”
However, Hill clarified on Tuesday that she does not support funding for a wall.
“The border wall is off the table,” Hill said.

To be clear, Hill does favor funding some form of physical barrier at the border, just not the massive border wall that President Trump promised during the 2016 presidential election, according to Kassie King, communications director for Hill.
Ultimately though, Hill reiterated that she wanted to open the government first before beginning any negotiations regarding the border.
“We can’t talk about any of this until the government is open,” Hill said. “We have things we want to negotiate on, so let’s open it. Then let’s go to the table.”
The current partial government shutdown is the longest in history, as Tuesday marks the 25th day.

Not her choice, Elaine; It’s We the People’s choice as she has stated from the beginning of her term. Only 39 % are in favor of building the border wall while 56% oppose it. As you may have learned in Civics, that is how a democracy works. She represents us; all of us. It is time for grown-ups to lead, not stand in the way like McConnell. Open the government back up, pay the workers and get down to doing our business- in that order.

Just for beginners. Why does she mention “make sure essential services are working again….” After all the 800,000 furloughed are termed non-essential workers. The essential services are and have been working. She wants her way first and then to negotiate. That is historically impossible. Every time Republican executives have allowed Democrat Legislators to have their way first, the Democrats have then either negotiated in bad faith or simply ignored the issue. It would be nice to be able to do what she says, but her leadership’s prior history makes that impossible.

Some kids that are being trafficked and a few women too. These brave “men” push the few women and children to the front so law enforcement and soldiers injure them first if there is a confrontation so at least get your facts straight.

We need a wall more than we need government. Stop paying those career criminals… oops… I mean congress people, and pay the people who are actually affected by this shutdown. 5.7B for a wall is cheap. The left says “if banning guns saves one life, we must do it” I say if securing the border saves one life we must do it.

We need more things done to protect our Nation. But this is a great start on a National Emergency that we have ignored for the last 30 years. Our Federal Government’s job is to protect it’s Citizens from all enemies foreign and domestic.
Congress’s job is not only to represent their OWN views, they must represent all of US and OUR National Interests.
Walls and Fences protect what we love and value in our homes, neighborhoods and businesses. We lock our doors to keep people from coming into our houses uninvited. We are being overrun by migrants from around the world. Building a physical barrier is a cost effective step in the right direction. Who needs the Government open if they won’t even protect us.

I find it so interesting that whether it’s Katie Hill or any other Democrat, they really have no intention of working with our President and they really don’t want to secure the border. That is the only way they will get additional voters but what happens when we cannot financially support them, the criminals that come through what’s going to happen if we have another catastrophic event, what are they going to do nothing. What happens when more illnesses are passed onto to us as citizens. No the Dems have no conscience regarding our USA citizens.
To Katie Hill (Congress Newbie) this is what hard work is called…. compromising…not insisting no Money at all for the wall until you get gov’t reopened first. The Dems have failed already to even attempt doing their Jobs.
If Walls are so old school and outdated why are they used successfully at least where they are placed in San Diego and every where else sufficient barricades are placed in multiple southern boarder facing states.
Walls are only part of it, and we do need all you mentioned (plus a Wall) on Fox and more, to stop the insane number of illegal crossings.

Give Trump 2.5 billion (whatever lesser amount than 5.6 that will make you feel you held out in some way for the wall improvement efforts now …enough to have him sign off, to open the rest of government.
You can turn down all the next installments in every upcoming funding bill you want, way ahead of any shutdown. Then you can take credit for getting those people paid and be the hero.
Nancy has offered nothing at all in the way of a compromise to solve the situation. Hell, she has been egging this on and you know it. People are watching Trump for sure, but if you think you, Nancy and the rest of Congress are not being judged for your lack of constructive actions you are mistaken and are more “green” than anyone thought possible.
You say no Money for a Wall when we have a Governor that thinks taxpayers can pay for a to fund an already failed Healthcare system to cover illegal persons in our state just for skiping over our border ( thanks to people like you and Gov. Newsome ). What part of “illegal” immigration don’t you understand that you wish to reward those for doing so…

If that’s the way she feels she needs to insist that the UTLA gets back to work before labor negotiations are completed. You can’t force compromise when it’s the opposition and have it your way when it is your backers (Big Labor Unions) have to make the compromise. She needs to use the UTLA situation as an example. They have been “negotiating” for over a year without a contract. See how well that’s been working out for them? Sometimes things need to come to a head and there needs to be a crisis for things to get done, unfortunately that is human nature.
