Saugus High School Honors 21 Athletes For Committing To Play At The Collegiate Level

For some seniors, this semester marks their final time in a classroom and on a team, but on Monday afternoon, 21 Saugus High School student-athletes committed that both their academic and athletic careers will continue at the collegiate level.

The group of 21 student-athletes represented a wide range of programs, including football, swimming, cross-country, softball, and even competitive cheer.

Football

The football program featured Jake Nuttall, Nolan Campeau, and Matt Long, who will also be playing baseball in college.

Head football coach Jason Bornn commended Long for being able to play two sports in high school and continuing that at the next level.

Long currently leads the baseball team with 10 stolen bases and has added 24 runs, 34 hits, and 20 RBIs this season.

Campeau was a dual threat as both a tight end and linebacker, totaling 47 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 47 receiving yards.

As for Jake Nuttall, he put together one of the best seasons by a quarterback in program history.

Senior quarterback Jake Nuttall capped off his Centurion career by breaking the program records for passing yards (6,355), completions (539), and completion percentage (64%).

This season alone, he threw for 2,778 yards, the most in the Foothill League, and was named the Foothill League Offensive Player of the Year.

One of his biggest moments came in October against West Ranch, when he set Saugus’ single-game passing touchdown record in a dominant 54–6 win.

Softball

The softball program had the most athletes sign to four-year programs, with five players committing.

The signees included Amelia Johnson, Savanna Smith, Malia Horvat, Juliana Beadnell, and Kona Ramsbottom.

As a team, Saugus has already clinched the Foothill League title and sits one game away from completing an undefeated league season.

Johnson leads the team with 39 RBIs and nine home runs. Smith leads with 11 stolen bases and 26 runs scored.

Horvat added 15 runs, 18 hits, and 10 RBIs during the season.

Ramsbottom, from the pitching circle, recorded 39 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched.

Girls Basketball

From the girls’ basketball program, Jasmine Garcia helped lead the team to its first CIF-SS championship appearance and a deep run in the state tournament.

Garcia also broke a program record for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs back in January for three-pointers.

While playing against Golden Valley, Garcia knocked down 10 three-pointers, finishing with 30 points in the Centurions’ 79–39 win.

She will be taking her talents to California Lutheran University.

Baseball

Representing the baseball program is Joey Nuttall, who has recorded 22 runs, 30 hits, and 25 RBIs this season.

“Joey is one of our star players this year. He’s great on the field and off the field,” said head coach Mike Miller. “One of the hardest things to teach in baseball is confidence, and that’s what Joey has. He has that confidence that you need in a baseball player.”

Nuttall will be taking his talents to the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Boys Soccer

Andrew Martinez was the lone player recognized from the boys’ soccer program and will be attending Westmont College.

Speaking on Martinez was Richard Gutierrez, assistant principal at the school.

Gutierrez shared how Martinez made an impact on soccer across the Santa Clarita Valley, from his time in AYSO to FC Valencia.

“Andrew is the kind of player and young man that every program looks for: passionate, intelligent and a true leader.”

Boys Volleyball

Another lone representative from his program was boys volleyball player Ash Bahroos, who is set to continue his career at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Head coach Amy Suppes described Bahroos as being the heart and soul of the team.

Competitive Cheer

Over the last four years, Yazzy Manzano helped lead the Saugus competitive cheer team to a CIF-SS title and three USA National titles.

Now, she will bring that championship caliber to Hope International University.

Cross Country / Track and Field

The cross-country and track-and-field program had a trio of athletes moving on to compete at the next level, including Annika Mark, Lucia Pearson, and Aiden Bodell.

Head coach Kevin Berns spoke highly of each of his athletes, many of whom were also preparing to compete in this weekend’s CIF-SS preliminaries.

Girls Soccer

From the girls’ soccer program, three players will be moving on to the next level, including Makea Leonard, who is headed to the University of Oregon, Carmen Flores, who will attend Biola University, and Frances Villegas, who will be going to Canisius University.

Leonard led the team with 28 goals and 10 assists.

Flores added five goals on the season, while Villegas posted 12 shutouts as a goalkeeper.

Swim / Dive

On the swim and dive team, Logan Divine committed to Washington & Lee University, while Zachary Kuhn will be attending the University of Redlands.

Head swim coach Jim Klipfel said that when he first met the group of now-seniors four years ago, Divine and Kuhn immediately stood out.

“Their athletic talent is masked only by their character and the large footprints they’re leaving on this school and the community,” said Klipfel.
