With summer temperatures continuing to rise, making sure air conditioning units are working properly is critical in staying comfortable at home, according to Kaleigh Smith of Pacific Aire.

“We don’t want to be that company that comes in and just fixes your system or tunes up your system — we want to go above and beyond,” Smith said, adding that most people don’t know how their air conditioning and heating systems work, or how to properly maintain them.

“We want to come in and be that educator, those mini teachers to come in and really get a customer that has this unknown item in their home that’s super crucial to their livelihood, we want them to become masters of it,” Smith continued.

The knowledgeable and experienced technicians from the Santa Clarita HVAC service company not only thoroughly inspect the air conditioning system during the tuneup, they also include a free filter replacement valued around $20, according to Mark Schneider, owner of Pacific Aire.

“(People don’t realize) how important an inexpensive filter is to that system,” Schneider said. “That changes everything.”

While it may seem like this is the time of year to get an air conditioning tuneup, Schneider is also encouraging residents to have their heating systems checked before new legislation takes effect Oct. 2 that will drastically change the options available if a new furnace is needed.

“The County of Los Angeles … decided that our furnaces still produce too much carbon monoxide or exhaust,” Schneider explained. “So they have required now that that drop even lower than it is, which is the lowest in the country. But unfortunately manufacturers don’t know how to make one, so they’ve been struggling to build this furnace to meet the requirement of this county.”

So far, manufacturers have only been able to create a “one-stage” furnace that meets the county’s new requirements, meaning it only has “on/off” functions, as opposed to the previous furnaces that are “multi-staging” and can be turned on at low or high heat, have ultra quiet aerospeed blowers and operate with high efficiency, according to Schneider.

As of now, Santa Clarita HVAC service companies like Pacific Aire can still install multi-staging furnaces that don’t meet the new requirements if a fine is paid, but after Oct. 2, this will no longer be an option, according to Schneider.

“If your furnace is getting to the point (where) it’s at the end of its life and you think you’re going to change your furnace in the next couple years, you want to do it before October,” he said. “Because we can still offer you all these options of furnace. As of October, you’ll have one type.”

During the heating tuneup, Pacific Aire technicians can determine if a furnace is reaching the end of its life and a replacement is inevitable in the near future.

“We’ll check the heat exchanger — that’s the danger part. That’s where the carbon monoxide mixes with the air, and we make sure that it has no cracks or any breaches,” Schneider said. “As long as that heat exchanger is sound, the rest of the components are parts, so you can fix and repair it.”

Schneider noted that he and his team approach all of their customers’ services with the “golden rule” in mind, whether it’s a routine HVAC tuneup, HVAC maintenance or a full HVAC system replacement.

He concluded, “I want my clients to be treated the way I want to be treated.”
