Action Family Counseling Promotes Alcohol Awareness In April

The counselors and staff at the Action Family Counseling center for drug and alcohol treatment in Santa Clarita are redoubling their efforts in April, “Alcoholism Awareness Month,” to educate residents about alcohol abuse, and to provide help for Santa Clarita residents who are developing, or are at risk of developing, alcohol addiction.

Since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) has designated April as “Alcohol Awareness Month” nationwide.

“Action gets involved with Alcohol Awareness Month every year, because we know alcohol is one of the most used and abused drugs, and also one of the most dangerous,” said Cary Quashen, founder and CEO of Action Family Counseling and host of the weekly “Families in Action” program heard Mondays at noon on KHTS AM-1220.

“Alcohol Awareness Month” is part of the NCADD’s mission to educate the American public about the dangers of alcohol abuse.

This year’s theme is “Talk Early, Talk Often: Parents Can Make a Difference in Teen Alcohol Use.” Throughout April, there will be local, state and national events designed to educate people about alcoholism prevention and treatment, especially among young people, and the role concerned parents can play.

“When you look at the statistics about car crashes, child neglect, domestic abuse, medical problems — the list goes on forever — alcohol abuse is a factor in most of them,” said Quashen, a nationally recognized expert in addiction and recovery.

“We dedicate our ‘Families in Action’ shows in April to alcohol awareness, because we know education and knowledge bring power,” he said.

The April 18 edition of “Families in Action” co-hosted by Quashen and Mike Dougherty featured three on-air guests who are in the midst of recovery from alcohol and/or drugs.

“Everyone should listen to that show,” Quashen said. “And at the end of it all, we say to people, ‘If you think you have a problem with alcohol, go with your gut, and get help. If you want to contact Action, we’re always available by calling 1-800-367-8336 or visiting the Action Family Counseling website (here).”

“Alcohol and drug use is a very risky business for young people,” said Andrew Pucher, NCADD president and CEO, “and parents can make a difference. The longer children delay drinking and drug use, the less likely they are to develop any problems associated with it. That’s why it is so important to help your child make smart decisions about alcohol and drugs.”

Action Family Counseling is a Santa Clarita drug and alcohol rehab center.
Action has drug and alcohol residential treatment locations in Santa Clarita, Piru and Bakersfield, as well as intensive drug and alcohol outpatient programs in Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Ventura, Pasadena and Bakersfield. Action Family Counseling supports and reinforces changes in behavior patterns so that adolescents and adults, or clients and their families, can fully indoctrinate the philosophies and principles needed to remain abstinent and stabilized for life.
