Boys High School Basketball

Valencia (6-2) picked up two dominant wins over the weekend at the 34th Annual Bob Hawking Simi Valley Tip Off Classic. On Friday, they beat Simi Valley (4-4) by a score of 84-39 and followed it up with a 91-44 win on Saturday over Moorpark (5-7). Now the Vikings are on a short hiatus until their next tournament after Christmas.

Canyon (4-4) went 1-1 over the weekend at the Simi Valley Tip Off Classic, with a 66-10 win over Santa Paula (1-7) on Friday and a narrow loss to Quartz Hill (3-3) on Saturday by a score of 53-50. The Cowboys’ next game is Wednesday night against Royal (5-2) at the Clash of the Coast tournament at Pacifica High School.

West Ranch (5-3) notched two wins over the weekend at the Burbank High School Tournament. On Friday, the Wildcats defeated Ventura (4-3) by a score of 62-45, and on Saturday, they took down Oakwood (6-3) in a 56-46 win. West Ranch next plays Monday afternoon at the 2019 Warriors Classic Tournament against Campbell Hall (2-1).

Saugus (6-2) continued their hot start to the season with two wins over the weekend at the Trevor Ariza Classic at Westchester High School. On Friday they beat South East High School (0-6) by a score of 79-37, and on Saturday, they pulled out a 57-51 victory over Gardena (6-3). On Thursday, the Centurions begin play at the Clash of the Coast tournament against host school Pacifica (2-3).

Golden Valley (3-4) lost to Quartz Hill by a score of 75-62 on Friday evening. Now the Grizzlies don’t play again until Dec. 21 at the Valley Showcase Invitational against Mira Costa (5-4).

Girls High School Basketball

Valencia (6-3) went 1-1 at the Sierra Canyon Invitational over the weekend, as they fell to the host team Sierra Canyon (6-1) 69-52 on Friday and notched a 71-47 win against Oak Park (0-4) on Saturday. The Vikings play next on Wednesday night at the Ventura Tournament against Newbury Park (2-4).

Saugus (4-3) was also at the Sierra Canyon Invitational over the weekend, where they went 2-1. They picked up wins against Glendora (6-3) and Riblet Academy (0-3) before they finally fell to Granada Hills Charter (6-3) on Saturday by a score of 47 to 46 in overtime. The Centurions next game is on Tuesday night against Oxnard (3-4) at home.

Golden Valley (1-5) lost two games over the weekend at the Viewpoint Holiday Tournament as they dropped games to Viewpoint (4-2) and Crossroads (5-3). Their next game is scheduled for Monday night at home against Vasquez (0-3).

Canyon (5-2) picked up a home win Friday night against Newbury Park (2-4) by a score of 71-41. Next up they head to the Covina Classic for a matchup with Charter Oak (2-2) Monday night.

Boys High School Soccer

Saugus (2-2) went 1-1 over the weekend at the Burroughs Tournament at Royal High School. On Friday, they fell 2-0 to Oak Park (1-3), but bounced back with a 2-1 win over Fontana (1-2) on Saturday. The Centurions are next slated to take on Westlake (2-3-1) Tuesday afternoon at home.

Golden Valley (4-0) dominated in a 4-0 home shutout win against Rosamond (0-3) on Friday. The Grizzlies got everyone involved as four different players scored for Golden Valley. Their next matchup is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at home against Alemany (1-0-1).

West Ranch (1-1) had their first loss of the season on Saturday on the road against Simi Valley (3-0) in a 2-1 loss. The Wildcats have a chance to bounce back on the road at St. Francis (3-0-1) Wednesday evening.

Girls High School Soccer

Valencia (2-1) fell for the first time this season in a 3-1 loss on the road against Royal (1-0) Friday night. The Vikings will look to return to form Monday afternoon on the road against La Cañada (0-5).

Hart (3-0) continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win over Foothill Tech (1-1) on Saturday. They’ll look to keep their momentum going as they go on the road to face Harvard-Westlake (2-0) on Tuesday evening.

College of the Canyons

Football: Canyons’ (9-3) season ended last week with a loss in the championship game, but this week the team received a heap of individual honors. COC quarterback Armani Edden was named the 2019 Southern California Football Association (SCFA) National Division, Northern League Offensive Player of the Year, and Head Coach Ted Iacenda was named Coach of the Year. Additionally, 16 players were named as All-SCFA selections.

Men’s Basketball: The Cougars (4-3) picked up a win, 93-71, against West Hills Coalinga (0-12) on Saturday night. Canyons was getting everyone involved as five Cougars scored in double digits. Christopher Bradford led the way with a near triple-double as he put up 20 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Next Canyons goes on the road to take on Chaffey College (5-4) Wednesday evening.

Women’s Basketball: COC (2-4) went 1-1 at the 43rd Annual Gilcrest Tournament over the weekend. On Friday, the Cougars dropped a game to Chabot (8-3) in a 81-57 loss. They bounced back on Saturday with an 83-62 win over Reedley (2-7) to close out the tournament. Cristian Patron and Diamyn Davis dominated down low for the Cougars as they combined for 40 points and 33 rebounds. Their next game is Wednesday night versus Rio Hondo College (9-3) at the Glendale College Crossover tournament.

The Master’s University

Men’s Basketball: The Mustangs (9-0) continue to roll to open their season, as they remain undefeated after a 96-77 win over Ottawa University Arizona (3-5) on the road Saturday night. Tim Soares dominated for Master’s as he put up 36 points and 14 rebounds. Now the Mustangs return home for a Thursday night matchup against La Sierra University (4-8).

Women’s Basketball: Master’s (10-0) has kept up the momentum in their unbeaten start to the season as they picked up another win Saturday night on the road against Ottawa University Arizona (5-3) in an 81-59 route. Four Mustangs hit double-digit scoring, but Stephanie Soares led the team in scoring with 20 points and nine rebounds. Master’s will look to keep the win streak going when they return home for a Thursday night matchup against the University of Saint Katherine (4-6).

Valencia Flyers

The Valencia Flyers traveled to Utah this past weekend to challenge the Ogden Mustangs for a three-game set. They suffered a 10-1 defeat on Friday night, a 13-2 loss on Saturday night, and then on the Sunday matinee, they dropped another game in an 11-0 shutout. With these three losses, the Flyers are now 2-20-2 on the season. The Flyers have a big weekend ahead of them: on Thursday, December 12 and Friday, December 13 they are set to play in back-to-back games against the Western Division-leading Fresno Monsters in their house, and then on Sunda,y December 16th they travel to Sin City to take on the second-place Las Vegas Thunderbirds. If the Flyers can string together some victories against these very tough opponents, it should give them a lot of momentum and could be the turning point in the season.
